On the anniversary of Israel's troop withdrawal from South Lebanon, a car bomb exploded outside a bus station in Hadera, Israel, killing two and injuring 65. The military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad Jerusalem Squads, claimed responsibility for this suicide car bomb attack that was carried out to commemorate Israel's withdrawal.25

June 1

A Hamas suicide bomber blew himself up as he stood in line outside the Pasha disco near the Dolphinarium, a popular Tel Aviv club. The explosive device was reportedly a composed of a large number of metal objects, including balls and screws. 21 were killed and 120 injured in the blast.25

September 11

Hijacked planes, American Airlines Flight 11, and United Airlines Flight 175, both en route from Boston to Los Angeles crash into the World Trade Center towers in New York - destroying both, and killing more than 2,500 people in the buildings and on the ground. Minutes later another hijacked jet , American Airlines Flight 77, carrying 64 persons, smashes into the west side of the Pentagon. According to press reports, 64 passengers and crew and 125 military and civilian personnel killed with 80 injured in the partially collapsed side of the Pentagon. A fourth hijacked plane, United Airlines Flight 93, carrying 44 persons, crashes in a field near Shanksville , Pa. Approximately 3,000 people are killed in the simultaneous attacks. 1,2, 5

Authorities arrest Algerian Ahmed Ressam as he tries to enter the United States from Canada at Port Angeles , Wash. They find more than 100 pounds of explosives in his car, foiling a plot to detonate a bomb at Los Angeles International Airport in the days before millennium celebrations. Ressam testifies he was trained at a camp in Afghanistan , US officials say is run by bin Laden. 1
